Potty Training by Marisa

Murphy has been good about potty-training,at first it was just, He goes on the floor we run him outside he does more. In the first few days of having him I took Murphy out a lot. Now I don't really participate in taking him out. Thanks to Mom And Meghan he is actually learning! Once, he went at the back door. When I do take him out, I carry him to the backyard put him down in the grass and say potty, potty, potty to get him to go. After Murphy is done it is hard to get him in the house. Most of the time just walking away works. The last time I took him out he walked right back to me. Dad built a pen so that we don't have to chase Murphy all over the yard.

When you potty train a puppy it is a lot of work. You have to follow him around all the time and make sure you catch him in the act. This sounds easier then it really is. Murphy is doing pretty good at it he doesn't have many accidents.

(Mom's note........ I just read this.... and I can assure you.... Marisa WILL be participating a LOT more in helping Murphy become potty trained....)

Murphy’s first haircut by Meghan

He was pretty good since it was his first haircut and he wasn't used to the clippers... but he was wiggly and I got to help hold him Mom clipped him using clippers for horses, they work nicely. He was hard to hold on to especially when his feet and face were getting done. But he wasn’t too bad until the other dogs were going nuts because Dad came home from the store. And the clippers scared him because they were loud and vibrated so he didn’t want to lie still. And he kept trying to eat the hair we had already clipped off. But if he doesn’t get used to it now he will be terrible when he gets older, so it’s really important that he gets clipped when he is little. He looked really good after his haircut. I took him out to see Dad and he said I was getting hair everywhere so I took him back to the laundry room and dusted him off and then I showed him to Dad agin and he said his feet looked like rat feet because they are pink and almost hairless but he looked cute anyway with his baby hair he is so soft and adorable.

Murphy's First Trip to the Store by Marisa

Murphy’s First Trip to the Store - Marisa
The first time we took Murphy to the store we also had Monty with us. (You can not go to a pet store with out Monty!) Murphy was in the back of the car with Meghan and I, he mostly rode on Meghan's lap. While we were shopping we shared him equally, she carried Murphy into the store, I would get to carry him out later. Mom had Monty, who thinks he owns any pet store we take him to and everything in them. We went over to the cat toys first. This is Monty’s favorite aisle and Murphy seemed to like it a lot too. There Murphy played with several balls, a couple of time he batted one of the balls under the shelves and Meghan had to try to get it out. Another time he batted it and it went clear into the next aisle!
As we were crossing the center of the store, Monty almost ended up Rottweiler food. Another family was there with their two dogs, one was just a little puppy. The bigger one, thought it was snack time, so Meghan and I hurried Murphy away to where the leashes and collars are. Although we had already gotten him a maroon collar and matching leash, we got him a collar with happy faces all over it but they didn’t have the matching leash. Then we looked at harnesses, for Murphy so he will be safe riding in the car. He is so little we couldn’t buy the kind Monty has yet so we just got him just a regular black harness for now.. Mom made me go and get a cart. Mom took Monty off to find some stuff to keep the tear stains off Murphy’s face, a common problem for dogs that are white. After exiting the aisle Meghan and Murphy turned right toward Horse supplies, I had the cart and followed Meghan.(Horse supplies is her favorite section of the store.) It was about a minute later when Murphy had a wet accident. As I was cleaning up the accident, Meghan brought me paper towels from a ( luckily nearby) "Oops" station. We then caught up with Mom she was looking at the dog bowls, we picked out a red one like Monty’s and after paying for the things in the cart, we left Petsmart and went home.
That night we played with Murphy and my dad bought him Puppy Chow from Pathmark because the stuff the breeder gave us attracts flies like you have never seen. We are changing his diet a little at a time so it doesn’t upset his stomach. That is the best way to do it. His first night he slept with my parents on the couch, I don’t think that was the plan but I guess they were really tired. Puppies are hard work! The next day Saturday, we took him (and Monty) to Petco and bought him a life preserver, he needs one so he can go out on our boat with us. I just hope he doesn’t blow out of the boat because he is less then two pounds and it gets breezy and bumpy. He doesn’t like the preserver much, but he seems to like our pool. He didn’t even try to scratch us when we put him in the water. We didn’t make him swim, we just held him in the water so he could get used to it. Mom takes him in the pool everyday now. It gets him very tired, and he takes a long nap. Myles is still upset, he thinks he is the mom because he tries to pick Murphy up and carry him around. He did the same thing to Monty, he even washes his face. Fala has decided Murphy can stay, as long as he stays away from her. Shadow must not mind because he is not hiding under the table. Monty doesn’t care as long as he gets new toys. Murphy is so funny, he tugs on the puff on Monty’s tail and on his ears, Monty so far has been tolerant and hasn’t growled much. The reason we take Murphy to the store so much is to help him become socialized around other people and animals. This is very important for any puppy, but a therapy dog even more so. MNC

Murphy by Meghan

Murphy is our white toy poodle that we bought from a breeder in New Jersey on the 5th of August. He is 2 ½ months old. On the way to the breeder's, after we got off the exit we took a right at the wrong light and got lost, but luckily I had the cell phone! I had called them on the day before so I had the number. I called and got the directions. We found our way and when we got there we looked in the window where the puppies are, and they had one poodle and it was white but we looked at it anyway. (I wanted an apricot girl.) They have little stalls to play with the puppy, so you can see if you like how the puppy behaves. He got on the floor and he started running around playing with toys, he also ran up to me and my sister and played with us too. So I asked how much he was and the lady told me , but the only problem was he was $99.00 over the limit my father had set for us. My mom told me that I could ask my dad if we could have an extra $99. So I called Dad, and he said it was Ok so we bought him. (I was so happy!) They gave him a bath, clipped his toenails and even put a hairtie in his head fluff. On the way home he got to sit on our laps in the back seat, and he kept trying to look out the windows at the trucks. When we got him home all the other dogs went nuts so we put them outside and let them in one at a time to meet their new little brother. We let Monty in first. (He is our other toy poodle.) He thought we bought a new toy for him so he didn’t mind the new puppy at all. Then Murphy started hopping up on the counter like he was trying to get out, we found out when he went to the bathroom on the floor, that’s his way of telling us he has to go outside. So he is pretty smart. He is so cute and fluffy and a good dog. We didn't have the same good luck with our other dogs, Shadow the Golden Retriever was ok, Fala our Scotty was aloof as always and well Myles is still out of sorts. But they are all coming around it will just take more time. I think it was a good match. MMC

Welcome to My Blog....

Hello.... I am Murphy O'Reilly P.I. I am a white toy poodle who lives with my family in New Castle, Delaware. I was born on May 15, 2005 and in less then a week I will be 3 months old. This blog is a record of my life after being adopted by my family. You see I am a very lucky puppy! Not all puppies get adopted into families as nice as mine. In the coming year you will learn all about me... where I sleep... what I eat... what I am learning... and how I am growing. My human sisters are the blogsters here. This is a school project for them and FUN, FUN, FUN for me because I get to play with them. They are going to teach me to be a service dog, even though at the most I will only weigh 5 or 6 pounds full grown. Think of it......me.......a therapy dog. Oops.... got to run.... my new human mommy wants to take me some place called "outside".... it's fun out there..... lots of strange smells and scary noises... NOW..... if ONLY I could figure out why they get so excited when I "go".... Wooof.....for now!!! MOPI
